Running {with a babe}

As I mentioned previously, I was super upset I didn’t run in the Flying Pig this past May. I really wanted to run the half again, which meant I would have needed to start training in January. I was still figuring out my new life. I couldn’t find the right time since I was breastfeeding (and still am at 10 months!!), working, not to mention it really was so freaking cold!  I just could not get the motivation to get out and run. I remember being so exhausted after working all day! Also, after being away from B all day I wanted to spend time with him. He would go to bed about 2-3 hours after I got home. I give kudos to those who train for races so soon after having a baby. It just wasn’t for me, and that is ok. Spending more time with B was what worked for me. I reminded myself that races will be there every year, he will only be a baby once.

 I got an email in January for a local half marathon that is in October. They had an early bird price of $25, yes only $25! That was cheaper than most 5k races around here! I went ahead and signed up and told myself by the time summer is here I will have more time to train. I am so glad I did that, because it turned out to be true! It also helps that I have this awesome new work schedule. B isn’t nursing every two hours any more and I am able to fit a run in.

I also remember saying once summer was here I will  be able to take B out on runs with me, another true statement! Stroller running is a heck of a workout! Pushing a 22 pound kid in a 30 pound stroller is no easy task! The only down side is that it is hard to run on the sidewalks around my neighborhood. Too many bumps and cracked sidewalks. I normally take him to a smooth path when I want to run with him. Our max run has been 5 miles, but after 4 he gets pretty antsy. That first run after a stroller run is the best though, you feel like you are flying!

Since I have the half coming up this fall I have tried finding other people to run with. I joined my local Moms on the Run (MOTR) group and met up for a group run one morning. Only 3 of us attended and our paces weren’t the same, so I ended up running alone. I have tried to find others who are at my pace to run with but it hasn’t been successful. I really have missed running with a group so I went ahead and signed up at a local running store to join their fall program. Tonight is the first meeting so I will get more information but I think this is exactly what I need! They seem to run a little different than my last group, like offering a 5k time trial to match you to the right group (my previous group let you just pick what pace you want). I am looking forward to meeting new people and having someone to chat with on those long Saturday runs!

I already have the feeling that this is going to motive me to run another full soon! I’ve missed those long runs of 16,18, & 20 miles! I know it won’t be long until I get back to those distances!
