This month marks the 1 year anniversary of me activly running. I must say I have come a long way since my high school days and I had to run for soccer (which I hated). I have learn to love running. I find it to be a stress relief. I just put in my head phones and go.
I remember last year, after working out for 4-5 days a week for 2 month, I went out for a run to see how far I could go. I went almost 3 miles without stopping. I was so excited that I could do this without a cramp, and without having to walk. I then signed up for my first 5k in April. What they say about racing is true, once you run one you want to run more. Which is what I did. I ran in races here in Cincy, Nashville, and Chicago.
This year I had a new goal, run a 10K. There is one the week before my birthday (so I don’t have to move up an age group!) that I will be running in May. Yesterday I went out to see if I could go 4.5 miles and I ended up going 5 and I felt great! I think getting myself to 6 miles will be a piece of cake. It amazes me what my body can do. I give it to the marathon runners!
I have learned something since I started running. Old, nasty men will honk their horns at you (really, what girl would like this!?), cars will not stop for you (most do-I always stop for runners now), your feet will take a toll (blisters, missing toe nails, etc), there will be days when you have sucky runs, but you will feel amazing after a great run.
I am so happy that spring is here, hopefully, and I can get out more. Who knows, maybe one day I will get up to half marathon status =)
